During January StigmaWatch received two reports regarding a television advertisement for Hotels Combined.
The ad showed a frenzied man hunting for hotel deals online. The man displayed unusual and excessive traits such as hysteric laughter and erratic movement that included hiding behind furniture and swinging upside-down from the roof.
The ad concluded ‘You would be crazy not to use Hotels Combined’.
SANE StigmaWatch wrote to the Advertising Standards Bureau, mentioning community concern that the ad stigmatised people with a mental illness and trivialised their symptoms.
While the ASB rejected the complaint, StigmaWatch has noted that the ad appears to have been edited, with the removal of the line ‘You would be crazy not to use Hotels Combined’.
