The recent Australian Government Mid Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook process has ensured SANE guided service and Forums remain free and accessible until July 2025 for Australians impacted by complex mental health issues.

As the national organisation representing those living with complex mental health needs, SANE provides a range of unique support services for individuals with personal lived experience of mental ill health as well as families and carers.

SANE services are designed to provide quality counselling and peer support to those unable to access it elsewhere. They’re tailored to people experiencing multiple mental health conditions or living with significant or long term mental ill health and are inclusive of neurodiversity and intellectual disability.

Well over 100,000 people engage with SANE information and services each year and demand is increasing.

According to SANE CEO Rachel Green, this funding extension provides a welcome 12 month respite but doesn’t solve the long term problem of ensuring adequate and equitable service access for those living with moderate to severe mental ill health.

‘SANE phone and digital services address a critical care gap for this community by providing free and easily accessible support with minimal waiting time.’

‘Our services have been proven to specifically address the ‘missing middle’ with up to a third of our service users unable to access support from anywhere else.’

‘This funding extension will enable us to keep our services available and free of charge for the next year but we can’t ignore the fact it is a temporary solution whilst reform activities are underway.’

‘Whilst it’s wonderful to have funding security for the near future, we do strongly urge the Australian Government to listen to the complex mental health community and ensure their needs are acknowledged in long term reform plans.’
