In May a young woman’s death by suicide was broadcast live around the world on the social media service Periscope.
Unfortunately, the video, which also streamed on Twitter and YouTube, became global news and was reported by many online media outlets.
In partnership with Suicide Prevention Australia and Mindframe, SANE wrote a formal complaint to the Chief Executive Officers of Twitter, Periscope and YouTube.
Primary concern was the explicit details of the young woman's death, including method and location, and the potential harm it could cause vulnerable viewers.
SANE encouraged the social media platforms to remove the footage and make help-seeking information available to viewers in the future.
