Concerning inclusion of method

At the start of June several major Australian media outlets covered the Coroners Court of Victoria's investigation into a young man's death by suicide.

The reports focused on the young man's attempts to take his own life, and the alleged failure of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Ballarat Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team to investigate his relationship with an older man.

StigmaWatch received numerous complaints regarding the explicit reporting, specifically the inclusion of the suicide methods used.

SANE urges court reporters to be careful when covering court proceedings and ensure a balance between the accurate description of proceedings, while limiting the potentially dangerous inclusion of suicide methods.
