When international publications breach guidelines.
Issue: In today’s 24/7 news cycle, with online news being the primary source of how many of us consume information, it is inevitable that we will be exposed to content that does not necessarily abide by the reporting guidelines that we pride ourselves on in Australia.
StigmaWatch regularly receives reports from the community regarding media items that have originated from overseas publications that contains content that is stigmatising, and potentially dangerous if read by those living with mental health issues or suicidal ideation.
Result: Mindframe is currently working with several overseas based media outlets to educate them on the importance of the Mindframe Guidelines. These relationships are improving daily, and we are making small inroads with overseas editors although it is a work-in-progress.
Why it mattered? Responsible and accurate portrayal of mental illness and suicide in the media should be the responsibility of all journalists, not just those in Australia. By working with international news outlets, we are moving closer to a day where mental illness and suicide is covered safely worldwide.
