Suicide and self-harm: methods and locations |
|
The media has an important role to play in suicide prevention and can
be a powerful tool in raising awareness of the risks, warning signs and
steps that can be taken when concerned about someone else or yourself.
When reporting on suicide and self-harm, some media outlets still
publish details such as methods and locations without realising these
may contribute to copycat deaths. Research has proven vulnerable people
can be triggered to act when learning of the death or self-injury of
someone they identify with or admire.
While acknowledging that any harm done by such publicity is
unintentional, StigmaWatch seeks to raise awareness of this issue with
the media and urge extreme caution. StigmaWatch also congratulates media professionals who do progressive
and helpful work when reporting on suicide, for their contributions to
suicide prevention, especially where essential advice and helplines are
included.
