A tragic suicide in the community of Yarrabah was reported in the article 'Suicide capital reclaims its doleful title,' published in The Australian on 30.11.07.
StigmaWatch contacted The Australian to communicate reader feedback on the dangers of reporting suicide method - reinforcing the message that this can affect vulnerable readers and unintentionally increase the number of suicides by the same means.
For people living with grief and hardship, hope and talk of change is helpful. StigmaWatch encourages the media to focus on what can be done and how to get support for those in need, by offering helpline numbers and avoiding terminology such as 'suicide capital,' that may contribute to feelings of hopelessness.
