On 1.5.07 Seven Network Dancing with the Stars panellist Paul Mercurio described contestant Fifi Box’s routine as that of a ‘schizophrenic pole dancer’. The inappropriate reference promotes misunderstanding of the true nature of schizophrenia and caused distress and outrage amongst some viewers.

StigmaWatch wrote to Mr Mercurio on 2.5.07 to let him know that use of the term 'schizophrenic' is not without consequence for people with this severe mental illness, and only trivialises their experiences. StigmaWatch also provided Mr Mercurio with information on schizophrenia.
