News Limited chief executive John Hartigan wrote an opinion piece in The Australian published 8 August 2007 where he described modern newsrooms as 'a bit schizophrenic about which exclusives we keep for the next morning and which stories we break on other platforms'.
SANE Australia wrote to Mr Hartigan, explaining that for people with
schizophrenia, feeling accepted by others and being a part of the
community makes a big difference to their wellbeing. SANE urged him to
use more suitable language to describe duality.
Mr Hartigan responded on 17.8.07 with the following:
'language does evolve over time and I do believe that my use of the word schizophrenic was in this instance justified...having said that I will certainly take your comments on board when speaking in future.'
