Schizophrenia used to describe feminism
Stigma Files 2007
Friday, 29 June 2007

The term ‘schizophrenic’ was misleadingly used by journalist Monica Dux, to describe feminism in the 1990’s, in the article: ‘Loud, proud and, yes, feminist’ published by The Age on 2.6.07.

Using schizophrenic to describe a situation or person may contribute to the community’s misunderstanding of what this mental illness actually is, and in doing so perpetuate existing stereotypes and inaccurate beliefs.

StigmaWatch contacted Ms Dux to voice this feedback and to encourage the use of more suitable language to describe duality.
