The method of suicide used by sixteen-year-old girls Stephanie Gestier and Jodie Gater, was reported by The Age, Sydney Morning Herald and The Australianin April 2007 - and again by 60 Minutes in May. The reports also romanticised the deaths by describing the picturesque location.
Research shows that describing suicide methods can increase suicide rates and copycat behaviour. Talking about a suicide pact in a poetic way dangerously presents it as a desirable option and act of friendship. In some instances reporting locations used for suicide may result in these places becoming 'popular' for suicide attempts.
StigmaWatch contacted these media outlets to remind them
that reporting suicide methods and glamorising the act is unsafe and has consequences for
vulnerable people.
Mr Paul Ramadge, Senior Deputy Editor of The Age, said: 'We debated our coverage and we took care with the words we printed, so if we have erred in any way, please accept and pass on our apologies.'
