The tragic discovery of a young boy's body in a suitcase was reported on 19.10.07 by John Lyons in The Australian. The article stated that Ambarvale locals were now aware that an 'extremely sick, psychotic person' is at large.
StigmaWatch contacted Mr Lyons to emphasise the difference between a 'psychopath,' which does not refer to mental illness, and someone experiencing psychosis. StigmaWatch urged Mr Lyons to avoid using language that wrongly suggests violent killers are likely to have a mental illness.
Mr Lyons expressed genuine regret for the choice of words, stating that he
fully understands the issues and the need for caution when using terms like psychotic.
People with a mental illness are statistically more likely to be the victims of violence than the perpetrators.
