During Desperate Housewives The Seven Network broadcast an ad for Sunsilk with a voiceover:  'For hair as mental as the mother of your illegitimate children'. The flippant reference to mental illness as a marketing tool is unacceptable and caused distress among viewers.

StigmaWatch contacted Unilever Australasia about the Sunsilk ad on 28.2.07 and explained the impact this marketing approach has on real people.

Nick Goddard, Corporate Relations Director Unilever Australasia, apologised and requested information about mental illness, saying: 'I would like to use this matter as an example to our marketing people to remind them of community standards and expectations that they are charged to uphold'.
