Edit Links Schizophrenia and Paedophilia
Stigma Files 2007
Monday, 07 May 2007

Throughout the start of April, Foxtel screened a promotion for a program on the Wanda Beach murders on the Crime Investigation Australia channel. The promotion featured Mike Hammond interviewing author Alan Whiticker, commenting on the case and whether children are safer now than they were in the sixties.

Mr Whiticker stated that: ‘In the 1960's not much was known about schizophrenia and paedophilia.’ Taken by itself this wrongly implied that people with schizophrenia are connected to violence and a threat to children.

This edit misrepresented the program, which did not suggest a linkage between schizophrenia and paedophilia - but referred to the diagnosis of the main suspect in the case. In the program Mr Whiticker identifies this individual, who has not been charged or tried for the crime. This person has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and is currently serving a sentence for unrelated offences.

StigmaWatch contacted Foxtel to discuss the promotion's damaging misrepresentation of schizophrenia. Foxtel re-edited the promotion to exclude the comment, offering an apology and expressing regret that the misleading reference was not picked up sooner.
