SANE Australia has condemned the 2006 White Ribbon Day campaign by UNIFEM Australia, which graphically depicts suicide and self harm in its efforts to stop violence against women.
The 2006 campaign, developed for UNIFEM by advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi, was launched on 1 November in the lead up to White Ribbon Day on 25 November. It features television, radio and print advertisements which urge men to wear a white ribbon on the day.
SANE Australia wrote to UNIFEM prior the campaign launch to express grave concern regarding the advertisements. SANE has also contacted some of the campaign ambassadors on this issue.
