The Australian published a news article by Verity Edwards and Jeremy Roberts that gave details of several methods of suicide, and an approximate time frame for death by one method.  The article entitled 'MP tells house of suicide methods' was published on 31.08.06.

SANE Australia wrote to Ms Edwards and Mr Roberts, urging them to ensure that future articles conform to the Mindframe and Australian Press Council  Guidelines on Reporting Suicide .

The Guidelines encourage journalists to avoid reference to details of suicide methods.  People in despair are often unable to identify solutions to their problems, and may be influenced by what they read.

The Guidelines also recommend that articles dealing with suicide include reference to helpline services available to people in distress and their families, with contact details.
