The April edition of FHM (For Him Magazine) contained a graphic and detailed article about methods of suicide. The article by journalist Warren Pole
was entitled 'Suicide: Is it all it's cracked up to be?' It described
different methods of ending one's own life, and included 'verdicts'
such as 'You are more likely to succeed with...' and 'Done right, it's
instant death'. Colour photographs of
people who had died by suicide accompanied the article.
StigmaWatch was inundated by complaints from readers. After speaking with Dominic Smith, Editor of FHM, SANE Australia lodged a complaint with the Australia Press Council. Other parties to the complaint were Suicide Prevention Australia, LifeLine and The Hunter Institute for Mental Health. The Press Council made
an adjudication on 26.06.06, finding for the complainants.
