SANE Australia wrote to the Online Editor of the Herald Sun, Mr John McDonald, referring him to the Australian Government's guidelines on reporting suicide. The guidelines advise that media reports should avoid describing the method of suicide to reduce the potential for imitation.

SANE Australia also urged Mr McDonald to encourage help-seeking behaviour in its readers by including helpline numbers.
