SANE Australia has written to The Australian regarding a number of articles published in November specifying methods of suicide in detail:
- Michael McKinnon's article 'Military suicides, self-harm revealed' published on 20.11.06;
- Kevin Meade's article 'Suicide Guide found on girl who hanged herself' published on 23.11.06;
- Two other articles published on 23 & 29.11.06 which reported details of suicide attempts made in Japan and the United States, respectively.
Research suggests that reporting such details can lead to imitation or 'copycat'
suicide attempts by vulnerable people in the community.
SANE Australia wrote to the journalists and to the Foreign News Editor for The Australian, conveying reader concerns and reminding them of the Australian Governments' guidelines on reporting suicide.
