Stigma Files 2006
|
According to Queensland politician Cameron Thompson, politicians need to act in a 'schizophrenic' manner to represent people with different interests.
Mr Thompson's comments were published in the article 'Schizophrenic MPs needed?' (South Burnett Times, on 30.06.06). StigmaWatch received reports from readers affected by schizophrenia, distressed that Mr Thompson
and the South Burnett Times were perpetuating the notion of schizophrenia as a split personality.
SANE Australia wrote to Mr Thompson, and to Mr Don Farmer, editor of the South Burnett Times, urging them to avoid using 'schizophrenic' to denote duality; schizophrenia does not involve split
personality.
