According to journalist and medical professional Dr Norman Swan, a woman who diagnosed herself with chronic fatigue and
purchased medications over the internet was either 'a complete
nutter, had only two brain cells.' The comments were made in the Radio National Health Minutes e-newsletter, sent 24.08.06.
Readers were distressed that Dr Swan, the presenter of Health Minutes,
had used the term 'nutter' and associated mental illness with
stupidity. This language stigmatises mental illness and
perpetuates discrimination.
SANE Australia wrote to Dr Swan encouraging him to articulate his ideas in more insightful and helpful ways.
