SANE Australia wrote to Mr Stuart Parker, Head of news and finance at AAP on 05.01.06, referring him to the Australian Government's guidelines on reporting suicide. The guidelines advise that media reports should avoid describing the method of suicide to reduce the potential for imitation.

SANE Australia also urged AAP to encourage help-seeking behaviour in its readers by including helpline numbers.
