Reporter for The Australian Elisabeth Wynhausen described the method of suicide of Scott Simpson, a man with schizophrenia, on 30.11.05.
SANE Australia wrote to Ms Wynhausen on 30.11.05, referring her to the Australian Government's guidelines on reporting suicide and mental illness. The guidelines advise that media reports should avoid detailed discussion of the method of self-harm to reduce the potential for imitation.
SANE Australia also urged Ms Wynhausen to encourage help-seeking behaviour in readers by including helpline numbers.
