Jakarta correspondent Sian Powell gave explicit details of Bali detainee Renae Lawrence's suicidal behaviour, in The 'Australian' on 22.07.05.

SANE Australia wrote to Ms Powell on 03.08.05, referring her to the Australian Government's guidelines on reporting suicide and mental illness. The guidelines advise that media reports should avoid detailed discussion of the method of self-harm to reduce the potential for imitation.

SANE Australia also urged 'The Australian' to encourage help-seeking behaviour in its readers by including helpline numbers.
