Normalising bipolar disorder
Good News Files 2006
Saturday, 29 July 2006

0608_stig_greatcomebacks The Autumn edition of TeenMatters magazine included a balanced and informative article by Jane Hampson entitled 'Great Comebacks!'. The article profiled six Australians who had faced major challenges in their teens, and included a feature on Jessica Rowe, whose mother who has bipolar disorder.

Inclusion of Ms Rowe's first hand account helps to normalise the experience for other young people who have a parent with a mental illness.  Approximately one in five Australians will develop a mental illness, and the media rarely discuss the effects upon children.

StigmaWatch was also pleased to note information on how teenagers can get help if they need it, including the provision of helpline telephone numbers.
