Sydney Morning Herald published an article entitled 'Homeless man helps save heart victim' on 03.07.06. The
article explained that the unidentified 'shabbily-dressed' homeless man
demonstrated sophisticated medical knowledge as he compassionately
assisted with a heart-attack victim.
The article, written by Jano Gibson, was
recommended by readers for its balanced and responsible reporting of issues of homelessness and mental illness.
Ms Gano quoted St Vincent's Hospital's emergency department director,
who said that it was not surprising a homeless man would have such
skills. 'A lot of people who are out on the streets have mental health
problems, and just because you've got a mental health problem doesn't
mean you are stupid or you are not educated'.
