Australian Story's program 'See how she runs' featured Australian triathlete Anne Garton on 22.05.06.
Anne Garton developed a debilitating mental illness six months into her career as a policewoman. She was eventually diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Dissociative Identity Disorder.
In hospital and struggling for a lifeline, she wrote a list of challenges for herself. At the top of the list she wrote, ‘compete in a triathlon’.
Over the years, and despite continued symptoms and repeated hospitalisation, Anne started to notch up
victories at state and then national level. Last year she was chosen to represent Australia at a major triathlon event in Hawaii.
Australian Story described Anne's journey with accuracy and compassion, helping to normalise the experience of mental illness and reduce community stigma.
