The vicious circle: housing and mental illness

New research from SANE Australia reveals that the majority (87%) of people with a mental illness have been homeless or without suitable housing as a result of being in hospital. The survey also found that affordability and stigma were among the most serious challenges they faced, and that the period around hospitalisation was when they were especially vulnerable to losing their home. ‘It’s unacceptable that such a high number of people already dealing with mental health problems had to cope with housing stress and homelessness as well,’ says Barbara Hocking, Executive director of SANE Australia.
