Facebook users will raise $1 for Australia’s national mental health charity SANE Australia, by simply voting for a video created as part of the Commonwealth Bank ‘Community Seeds’ project.
As one of six charities and the only mental health organisation included in the initiative, people can vote for SANE on the Commonwealth Bank Facebook page, www.facebook.com/commonwealthbank, and every vote will generate a $1 donation to the SANE Helpline.
The Facebook user who generates the largest number of friends who also vote for a Community Seeds video will win $5,000, with an additional $5,000 donated to their community organisation.
SANE Australia’s Executive Director, Barbara Hocking, says every person who takes a couple of seconds to vote for the SANE video will help support the one in five Australians diagnosed with mental illness every year.
‘Next time you are on Facebook take a few seconds and support people affected by mental illness,’ Barbara says.
‘Almost certainly everyone is going to know someone with a mental illness, in their family, friends, school or workplace. Every vote will help SANE provide people with the right information and support when they really need it.’
Program Coordinator with SANE, Margie Nunn, says the services offered by SANE, including its Helpline and website, education resources, stigma reduction and suicide prevention programs, are invaluable to people with a mental illness, their family and friends.
‘The SANE Helpline helps over 10,000 people every year by providing much needed information on mental illness and referring callers to the relevant support services in their area,’ Margie says.
‘Personally I wish my family had known about SANE some years ago when my brother was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, they could have provided us with critical information and advice about the illness and how best to manage it as a family.’
‘Mental illness is common and it’s great to know SANE can help people realise that they can gain back control of their life.’
SANE Australia offers a wide range of resources to assist people diagnosed with mental illness and their families.
