Responsible reporting of suicide

Recently the issue of reporting on suicide has been covered by the media. With the Australian Press Council currently reviewing its guidelines, it is timely for an open discussion as to what details should be reported in the public interest.

While SANE Media Centre encourages the media to report on the issue, it is important to  consider the impact a story may have on the audience. SANE Media Centre advises the media to check existing guidelines, research the facts and consider how language may affect vulnerable people.

SANE Australia’s Executive Director, Barbara Hocking, recently examined the issue from the perspective of family members bereaved by suicide who can, inadvertently, be re-traumatised when reading these reports.
