SANE Announce Book of the Year 2010

SANE Australia is pleased to announce the 2010 SANE Book of the Year is Flying with Paper Wings by Sandy Jeffs.

The SANE Book of the Year Award recognises outstanding Australian non-fiction titles which promote understanding of mental illness and its effect in the community.

Award-winning poet Sandy Jeffs has lived with schizophrenia for over thirty years. In Flying with Paper Wings she shares her story from an abusive childhood to an adolescence torn apart by a traumatic sexual assault and descent into psychosis at the age of 23. Sandy reflects on what helps her cope with the challenging and persistent presence of voices seeking to control, degrade and harm her.

‘Sandy’s story highlights the strength required each and every day to live a full, active life despite the distressing and unrelenting symptoms of her illness,’ says SANE Australia Executive Director, Barbara Hocking.

‘Her words provide inspiration to those who experience mental illness and encourage understanding and compassion from those lucky enough to never have been faced with such adversity. It is with much pleasure that we name Flying with Paper Wings as SANE Book of the Year.’
