Suicide Prevention

People affected by some mental illnesses have a far greater risk of suicide than the general population. Suicide prevention is therefore integral to all of SANE’s work, from research to development of information resources, to training of our Helpline staff.

Helpful factsheets
See SANE Factsheets on ‘Suicidal behaviour and self harm’, ‘SANE Steps - How to help when someone is suicidal', and ‘Thinking of suicide – Getting help if you're feeling suicidal’.

Staying Alive
'The SANE Guide to Staying Alive’ has been written specially for – and with the help of - people with a mental illness who have suicidal thoughts. Full of useful information and tips, it is available from the SANE Bookshop.

Bereavement Support Project
SANE is working on an important new research project to improve supports and services for family and friends of people with mental illness who have died by suicide or have gone missing. The first stage of the project aims to gain a better understanding of the needs of those in this situation, and assess the effectiveness of existing supports and services.

The project is being conducted in cooperation with organisations such as Compassionate Friends, AREFMI and the National Missing Persons Coordination Centre, and is funded by the Australian Government under the National Suicide Prevention Strategy.
