Born in Melbourne, tennis ace Pat Cash now divides his time between London and Queensland where he has established a tennis academy. A Davis Cup winner at the age of 18, Cash went on to win the Wimbledon Championship 4 years later – prompting his famous clamber up the stand to thank his coach and parents.
Cash has also been honest about his experience of mental illness, especially when he was young and when playing tennis competitively. ‘I was depressed, seriously depressed. There are times I have been close to committing suicide,’ says Cash, who writes about the experience in his autobiography, ‘Uncovered’.
Thanks to treatment and learning to avoid ‘triggers’ for depressive episodes such as stress and drug use, Cash is able to get on with his life, largely free of depression, and talks openly about his experience in order to encourage others to seek help.
