Suicide Prevention
People affected by some mental illnesses have a far greater risk of suicide than the general population. Suicide prevention is therefore integral to all of SANE’s work. Read more about SANE’s work in this area. More>>

Mind and body

SANE Australia’s Mind and Body Initiative recognises that a healthier life includes both mental and physical wellness, and promotes research to promote improved health for the whole person. This includes research commissioned from others, such as the Smoking and Mental Illness: Costs report conducted by Access Economics. The report revealed that people with a mental illness now make up almost 40% of all smokers, that they receive little or no help to quit, and pay a terrible cost for this neglect (See Full Report here). Another study has shown that people living with long-term health conditions such as diabetes and arthritis are twice as likely to experience depression. A SANE Research Bulletin has focused on Physical Health Care and Mental Illness, and SANE is also working in partnership with St Vincent’s Mental health Service (Melbourne) to research and develop resources to improve physical health monitoring and improvement for people living with a mental illness.
