Mental Illness and Bereavement Kit

Category: Suicide

Price: $48.00

A resource for health professionals so they can better support the families and friends of people with mental illness who die by suicide.

Suicide is a leading cause of death for people seriously affected by mental illness. Loss caused by suicide has a profound effect on families and friends and studies indicate that people bereaved in this way are at a higher risk of suicide themselves. Those who lose a person with mental illness to suicide often do not receive adequate support from the treating service (including other clients with mental illness). Services themselves recognise that this difficult issue is not always addressed as well as it could be within their organisations . . .

The SANE Mental Illness and Bereavement Kit provides the information you need to facilitate a short (1.5 hours) professional development session where staff can learn about and discuss these important issues. The Kit includes a DVD that tells the stories of four bereaved families, exploring how they coped and what they feel would have helped them more effectively. It also includes factsheets, referral information and the SANE Bereavement Guidelines that outlines best practice for services with an Action Plan for implementation.
