‘With fire, flood and economic uncertainty, 2009 has been tough on many Australians, and record numbers are calling the SANE Helpline every day,’ says Stan Wallis AC, Chairman of SANE Australia.

Whatever the cause, mental health problems are devastating for the person affected – and for their families too, as I know from my own experience. And the longer these conditions go untreated, the more distressing they become. Tragically, the suicide rate for those affected by mental illness is over ten times the national average.

Thankfully SANE Australia is there for them and their families.

Anyone, anywhere in Australia, concerned about a mental health problem can make a free call to the SANE Helpline, and have access to trained health professionals who provide advice, information and referral to services in their local area.

In the past ten years, the Helpline has provided this urgently-needed service to over 100,000 families, but now we need your help for this to continue.

While more people than ever before are calling the SANE Helpline, it depends entirely on the generosity of ordinary Australians to keep the lines open. This is true of all SANE’s work, including its important research, education and stigma reduction activities. People affected by mental illness and their families need a special kind of support – yours.
