Locos Burritos restaurant produced a marketing flyer advertising menu items such as 'straight
jacket' burritos, 'psycho' tacos, 'crazy loon' nachos and 'asylum'
salads.
SANE Australia was contacted by distressed local residents who were
offended by the menu, which had been placed in their letter boxes
around 20.02.06.
SANE Australia contacted Locos Burritos letting them know
that their marketing strategy was causing distress to vulnerable people
in the community. StigmaWatchers also individually contacted the restaurant, to let them know how the marketing affected them.
We spoke with Anne Marie Johnston, Manager of Locos Burritos on 19.04.06. She said:
'It was not our intention to create any harm or added stigma and
we apologise that this has been the case. The directors of the company
are not taking this situation lightly and will be reconsidering many of
our menu items' names.'
